Boys with older brothers more likely to be gay

A new study shows that men who have older biological brothers, are more likely to be gay than those who don’t. The more older brothers he has, the greater the likelihood is.
“The link between having older brothers and homosexuality has long been established, but the new findings indicate firmly that conditions in the womb before birth, and not the subsequent family environment, are responsible.”
It’s yet unknown what those conditions may be, though there is speculation they may be related to the way the mother’s immune system reacts to carrying male foetuses. The Y chromosone in the male foestuses may be recognized as foreign and generate a stronger immune response, which increases which each subsequent pregnancy.
Below is the article from the Times on the study.

Who holds a press conference to announce fire code violations?

Apparently Los Angeles prosecutors do. According to this Reuters article, LA prosecutors are throwing the book to yoga teacher Bikram Choudhury, accusing him of running a studio without a license, overcrowding it and not maintaining emergency exits. Surely that’s not such a unique thing that requires a press conference?
I’ve never heard of Choudhury myself, but this really sounds like a vendetta in the part of the LA district’s attorney’s office. Don’t they really have anything better to do?

Superman

SuperLois.jpgMika has been saying that she wants to see the new Superman movie – it’s been impossible to escape its publicity when you even have to walk under a Superman gate at Safeway to enter the store. She’s not a big Superman fan per se, but her friend Emmanuel is devoted to him, when he is not Superman himself. So every time we see something supermanish (all the time), she thinks of Emmanuel and wants to buy it for him.
I was not at all sure that Mika could sit down through a whole “adult” movie at the theater. She’s gone to see some animated movies, but her record hasn’t been great. She walked out during one (too loud) and fell asleep at another. So I decided to get the old Superman and see if she could sit still for that movie at all. Just like I predicted, she couldn’t. Not even for ONE minute. In a way it’s good, I don’t really want her to be staring at the TV for so long, but it definitely means we are not taking her to the theater.
I, on the other hand, watched it. I hadn’t seen it for years, but I soon fell into its magic. OK, forget about the magic, the romance. The scene in which Superman takes Lois Lane flying has to be the most romantic scene in all of movie history. It still tingles all the right parts of me and brings me right back to the time when I was a young teen (or was I a preteen?) watching it.
I have no interest in watching the new Superman. I don’t think anyone but Christopher Reeve could be Superman, and the actress they have playing Lois Lane looks like a child, not a woman. But I think I will rent Superman II, and watch those scenes in Niagara falls again (can’t tell you what the rest of the plot was).

SLCAN

A few months ago, Tim Holmes, the owner of Zocalo Coffee House in San Leandro convened a number of community-minded individuals together with the idea of forming a group that would work to make San Leandro a better city for all. And so, the San Leandro Community Action Network (SLCAN) was born. The mission of the group is to improve the quality of life in San Leandro by ensuring quality education, smart growth, and an inclusive and equitable community. We are trying to improve the schools, encourage good development and keep bad development away and try to create a community where every culture and subculture feels not only welcomed but embraced.
So far our most visible activity has been a Mayoral candidates forum, which apparently was very useful. We plan to hold more before the next elections.
If you live in San Leandro, check us out. We will soon open the group for membership, for the time being you can sign up for our announcement list.
