This is heartbreaking. It reminds me of a newspaper story from long ago detailing how six men in Egypt died while trying to save a chicken that fell into a well. I kid you not.

Aug 10th, 2009 | FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The family of a 73-year-old Alaska man who fell from a tree after rescuing a cat last month decided to have his breathing tube removed.
Joseph Fletcher of Fairbanks has been in a Seattle hospital since suffering a head injury, a torn aorta and broken ribs in last month’s fall.
In an e-mail to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, daughter Rebecca Fletcher Bafus said the decision to have the tube removed over the weekend was not easy, but it’s what her dad would want. Doctors estimate Fletcher may live a few days before succumbing to respiratory failure.
Fletcher, the co-owner of J and E Trees, fell 25 feet after letting the cat down with a rope and pet carrier.

The kids wanted a puppy. Very, very much. I didn’t, I don’t. Puppies don’t come house trained, I’m not willing to clean after them. We have a cat, Syria; her brother Jordan died a year ago. The kids, accepting that there would be no puppy, wanted a kitty. I figured, why not? Syria is such a good cat that she’d get used to him, and a kitty shouldn’t be much more work than a cat (they come house trained :-). I’d forgotten how active kitty cats are, how much they like to scratch and so forth, but our house is pretty much in shambles, so there isn’t much left to destroy.
Yesterday they had an adoption event at the Hayward pound. There were lots of kitties to chose from, many of them very cute, I don’t really know why Mika chose “Indi”, not the one I’d have chosen but it’s not for me 🙂 He’s cute, in the way all kitties are cute, but not specially so. In the end, that’s probably a good thing if that means that but for us, he’d have had more of a difficulty getting adopted.
He’s supposed to be only two months old, but I don’t buy it. He’s quite long, though pretty skinny. I’m sure that will change. He is a rescue kitty, I don’t know where he comes from. His “intake” date was August 5th and I got it yesterday. I don’t know if that meant that he’s only been with his foster family for 3 days. He was dewormed a month ago, and he had two siblings, so I assume he came from a family rather than from the street.
In any case, so far he’s proved to be a great kitty. When we got Syria and Jordan from the pound, they were very timid and afraid of us. They immediately went into the scratching tent we got from them and would not go out. I don’t remember how long it took them to get used to the house and us, but it definitely wasn’t immediate. This kitty, on the other hand, has been all over the house without any problems. He plays with the kids, lets them pick him up and hold him/pet him. Of course, when Camila has him he often wants to leave 🙂
Last night the kitty came to sleep with us (Mika and I) in our bed. He laid between us and purred and purred while we petted him. He closed his eyes and slumbered for a while. It’s great to see him so comfortable and happy.
Syria, of course, is less than happy to have him here. She’s growled at him but in no way tried to attack him. I think it’ll just take some time to have her be comfortable with him. I will definitely pay more attention to her, at least to the degree that she asks for it. As I told her, she is *my* cat.
The kitty really likes the cat tree, which is great because Syria hasn’t used it in a long time, and it’s not the most attractive piece of furniture to have in my living room – if it’s there, I want it to be used.
Mika had wanted to name whatever kitty we got Isis or Osiris – she’s been reading the Theodosiabooks (about a girl whose parents are Egyptologists) and is into Ancient Egypt. However, the kitty’s name was “Indy” and both Mika and I thought it was a great name for a cat – so we’re calling him that. Camila wasn’t too happy, but her decisions on things are pretty random.
Here are a couple of pictures of Indy – I’m sure I’ll be posting many more as we take them:

I’m generally a fan of Amazon: they have good prices, good customer service, free shipping in orders of $25 or more and products that arrive fairly quickly (though there are exceptions). But I’m not thrilled about their pricing and search policy. While they often have the lowest prices, they often offer a same product in multiple pages (their own and those of its associated businesses), often at wildly varied prices, but you cannot always find the product with the cheapest price by searching for it in Amazon’s search engine.
For example, do a search for the “connair quick gem” (which I just got Mika) and the only search result you will get is this one, from an associate that sells the product for $18 + $5.20 shipping. But if you search for “quick gem jeweler” you will arrive to this page
which sells directly for Amazon for $8 + free shipping (in orders over $25). Yes, the first one is a misspelling of the company maker – but if it could find the first product, why not the second?
My other concern is that Amazon’s prices change wildly, so you have to be pretty attentive and check multiple times to see that you get the best deal. And finally, it’s often difficult to find very cheap products (let’s say, $5 and under) that qualify for free shipping, often what you need to get your order to $25 to get such free shipping.
But despite all that I continue buying from Amazon – most often because I can’t find the same product cheaper somewhere else.
Today I gave Mika a full manicure: hand soak, scrub massage (it tickled), lotion and nail polish. She, of course, loved it. I made the hand soaking solution and the hand scrub myself, following recipes I found online (that I’m posting below). I think both worked reasonably well. I used a lotion I had made previously, but I have another recipe for a hand lotion that I want to try. I first want to get rid of most of the other bottles of lotions that I’ve made, however. If you live in San Leandro and want some all-natural lotion, I’ll be happy to give you some (I have extra Tropical Sun lotion available now).
As for the nail polish, I bought a set with 10 bottles of nail polish at Grocery Outlet for $5. The nail polishes are Sally Hansen brand, a low-end brand for what I understand. Most of them are in the pinkish-to-reddish spectrum, there are a couple beige/cream ones and a blue one. The kit seems to have been put together from bottles that were being sold individually, as some of the bottles have a 50% off sticker on them and/or price stickers (original price $4.29 per bottle!). In any case, we’ll now have nail polish for the rest of our lives.

Olive & Lemon Hand Scrub Recipe

From Good Life (eats)
Note: I halved this recipe as I don’t know how long it’ll keep and will refrigerate just in case. I also added more sugar and salt than required as it otherwise was too wet. This recipe is very similar to the face scrub I made a couple of months ago – however, the addition of coarse salt will probably make it too rough to use on your face.
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup kosher salt
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- zest of 1/2 a lemon, grated
- 1/8 tsp. lemon extract (optional)
Mix all ingredients and spoon into a lidded container. When ready to use, massage a tablespoon or so on/with your hands.
