Adiós Senador Kennedy

tedkennedy.jpgSenator Ted Kennedy died last night at 77 – not an unexpected event for someone who had brain cancer. But just as when his illness was announced, I’m profoundly sad over his death. Ted Kennedy was many things, but one that hits me closely is his championship of human rights in Latin America. I know many people are alive today because of his efforts on their behalf.
So, today, I mourn him.

Insecure security

Blackbird Development GroupWho is Blackbird Development Group? I was quite surprised that I couldn’t find any reference to them on the web. Who, in this day and age, does not exist even if by reference, on the web? Well, apparently Blackbird Development Group. A new start up? A project within a larger company? A secret government unit?
But at least we know that they exist – because while they care enough about their privacy/security to issue temporary security badges to their visitors (with holograms, no less!), they don’t actually care about collecting them when they leave. I, not the most observant of people, found this one at “an undisclosed location” ;-).
So, Blackbird Development Group, whoever you are, be more careful next time 🙂

The Argentine Supreme Court rules drug consumption is legal

The Argentine Supreme Court ruled today that the consumption of drugs, done in a private space and without harming third parties, could not be penalized by the state. It based its ruling in the very explicit right to privacy clause of the Argentine constitution:
“The private actions of men that in no way offend the public order and morals nor harm a third party, are only reserved to God and fall outside the authority of judges”.
It’s one of the few times that I like seeing God in a legal document 🙂

And it’s not just McKinley – it’s the whole San Leandro School District

which is just f****d up.
I just got a call from a friend who moved a block away from a San Leandro school. Today, the day before school starts, they called her and told her that there was no room for her son in that school and that he had to go to another one. Of course, the school district does not offer any transportation for the kid, and the parents don’t have the necessary transportation. But, according to the receptionist at the school, “that’s not my problem”.
Again, they had the whole summer to figure out attendance to the schools. There is no reason whatsoever that they have to wait until the last possible minute to tell the parents that they cannot accommodate their child, not allowing the parents to even start to figure something out. In this economy, parents cannot afford to be missing work because the San Leandro School District cannot get its shit together.
And of course, the problem starts at the top, with the incompetent Superintendent and the (old) Board that extended her contract.
Anyway, it’s interesting that I’ve only talked to three people today. Of those, both had problems with the school district. The third is a home schooler.
